A Worley world of engineering

October 18, 2022

GMC member Worley recently invited the GMC’s Girls Leading Advanced Manufacturing (GLAM) and Geelong Future Leaders of Industry (GFLOI) participants to learn more about their organisation and careers in engineering. The Worley team, through their STEM in Schools program, were proud to host the high school students from the Geelong area to attend a morning of learning and activities at their Melbourne Office.

The Worley team spoke about their pathways into the organisation and many different careers available once there. This session made a great impression on the students with feedback from them including:

“The pathways to working at one company – all the presenters had a completely different journey/background but ended up at the same company.”

“Variability in jobs – at one company, in one project etc. Good to know there are lots of different ways to be involved in the things that interest you.”

Students participated in activities that involved understanding the energy transition and the use of digital tools.

For the energy transition activity, students constructed a small solar wind turbine. This took time, understanding instructions and using some ingenuity to get the turbines to work. As it was a cloudy day, the solar panel didn’t work at its most efficient. One of the students held the panel up to the lights in the room, and it worked. Great thinking!

Students from this activity noted:

“Read all instructions before beginning ..  haha!”

“Environmental science and sustainability are only going to grow bigger.”

The digital tools activity focused on Assisted Reality whereby a team member was in another room with a headset and had to build a Lego® ice cream van relying on clear instructions from the rest of the team in another room. Students from this activity noted:

“The technology that exists to manage working remotely is really cool!”

“Working in a team is really fun. I think I would really enjoy that in my future occupation”

Thank you to the Worley team who gave their time to the students, answering questions, providing insight into work at Worley and showing different opportunities available to them.

Worley will continue to support STEM initiatives and partner with organisations who to promote great opportunities and pathways into our industry. Worley values these students are our future, and we are excited to see where that leads.
