The Australian Steel Institute (ASI) has launched a campaign to address a surge in low-priced imported fabricated steel that threatens the local industry.
ASI has submitted a Safeguard application asking the Federal Industry Minister to investigate under the Safeguard trade measure. The campaign also urges steel businesses to contact their state and federal MPs to share how imports are impacting their operations.
The immediate goal of the campaign is for the government to introduce emergency measures such as tariffs or quotas to provide temporary relief.
GMC has raised concerns from members facing low-cost – inferior quality – imported products with the International Trade Remedies Forum (ITRF). The forum advises government on improving anti-dumping legislation and helps protect local manufacturing from dumped or low-cost imports.
