Hydrogen Expo showcases low emissions opportunity

June 26, 2025

GMC was thrilled to host the Geelong Hydrogen Expo on June 13, with more than 150 business and community attendees across five jam-packed hours of knowledge and opportunity sharing. The GMC event, powered by Viva Energy, was held to coincide with the landmark opening of Viva’s new energies service station, Australia’s first publicly accessible hydrogen refuelling station, which will refuel a fleet of heavy hydrogen-powered trucks and buses. Attendees had an opportunity to tour the facility, the first of its kind in Australia, and hear from experts and partners in the project.

With EV fast-charging also on-site, this project acts as an important test-bed for zero emissions transport solutions in Australia. ARENA CEO Darren Miller says 10-15 per cent of the transition to renewables will not happen without hydrogen – developing the demand – deploying the vehicles – is the next step to decarbonising the transport sector. Over 30 per cent of Co2 emissions come from transport globally.

Geelong, with this incredible infrastructure, is now at the forefront of change.

The Hydrogen Expo featured partners in the project, including Toll Group, Cleanaway Waste Management (whose rubbish trucks collect for City of Greater Geelong), ComfortDelGro buses (CDC) and Barwon Water, as well as 12 amazing exhibitor companies and organisations. Thank you to each of them – the who’s who in hydrogen development in this country – for staging a fabulous day.
