Welding skills shine at Hanlon Industries

August 23, 2023

GMC had the pleasure of attending the Annual Apprentice Welding Competition hosted by member Hanlon Industries recently.

Hanlon sponsors, community organisations, and industry delegates faced the challenging task of choosing a victor from an exceptional showcase of technical skill and creativity.

Hanlon Industries told GMC, “Conducting our apprentice competition aligns with our core mission of nurturing skills, promoting innovation, and ensuring excellence in the industry. This platform empowers young talents to demonstrate their abilities, fostering both technical proficiency and creative problem-solving.”

The competition is in its second year at Hanlon Industries and demonstrates an innovative approach by the organisation to recognise and celebrate the skills of its staff, particularly welders and boilermakers – trades that are in high demand.

Dean Talbot, Head of People and Growth at Hanlon Industries sees the annual event as a critical element of the business. “These events also strengthen our ties with the community, sponsors, and industry partners, and keep us attuned to cutting-edge trends and techniques.”

“By facilitating the exchange of ideas and approaches, we contribute to the growth of both individuals and the industry as a whole. Our commitment to these competitions underscores our dedication to skill development, community engagement, and continuous advancement.”

Contestants were given a span of 5 hours to craft a work of art under the theme of ‘marine’, utilising discarded or leftover metal pieces available onsite. The outcomes were genuinely remarkable, and attendees and staff enjoyed a delightful BBQ lunch as the votes were calculated throughout the event.
