Students take on engineering design challenge with gusto

August 23, 2023

Competition was fierce but collegial as Year 9 and 10 secondary students from around the region took part in an annual Science and Engineering Challenge held during National Science Week on Deakin Uni’s Waurn Ponds campus.

Geelong Manufacturing Council was proud to sponsor the long-running event, which sees school teams compete in a range of engineering challenges aimed at building interest and excitement in STEM studies.

Each event culminated in a high-stakes bridge building competition which saw many innovative designs from students. Bridges were tested carrying increasing weights to determine the winning design. This year’s winner utilised balsa wood, cardboard and masking tape, while meeting strict weight guidelines, to withstand an impressive 9+ kg load over a one metre span.

The Science and Engineering Challenge, part of National Science Week, was delivered by University of Newcastle with the support of Geelong Rotary Clubs and sponsors including GMC, Hanwha and Deakin Manufutures.
