Viva Energy has launched Australia’s first dedicated sustainable aviation fuel storage and blending facility linked to an airport fuel system. The facility will supply lower-emissions jet fuel made from biogenic feedstocks, including used cooking oil, to Brisbane Airport.
The $4.93 million project at Viva Energy’s Pinkenba Terminal included refurbishing a 3.3 million litre storage tank and establishing certification and accounting systems to track the fuel’s environmental benefits.
A key part of the project is the supply of sustainable aviation fuel from EcoCeres, a renewable fuels producer that converts waste-based feedstocks, including used cooking oil, into lower-emissions fuels.
The fuel supplied to Pinkenba was produced at EcoCeres’ Pasir Gudang facility in Malaysia, highlighting the growing role of international supply chains in supporting Australia’s transition to sustainable aviation fuel.
Sustainable aviation fuel will be blended with conventional jet fuel and delivered through Brisbane Airport’s existing infrastructure, meaning passengers and aircraft operations should see no practical difference.
Viva Energy says the project is an important step in building reliable supply chains, customer confidence and the infrastructure needed to support aviation decarbonisation in Australia. The initiative was part funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency and supports the development of a future domestic sustainable aviation fuel industry.
