GMC major partner Viva Energy was recently featured on ABC news for its trial with Snackbrands Australia (makers of chip brands Thins, CCs and Cheezels) to use leftover cooking oil to create chip packaging in lieu of using brand new soft plastics.
The trial which involved importing around 120 tonnes of used cooking oil from Snackbrands, to replace crude oil usually used to create soft plastics, to be turned into 100 tonnes of soft plastic and then transformed into 15 million chip packets.
The trial is aimed at reducing Snackbrands’ reliance on new plastics and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Viva Energy Australia’s sales and commercial manager James Harrington said there is a lot of used cooking oil that’s collected in Victoria that could be used for the same application.
