Why educating the next generation will benefit Geelong manufacturing
Who gave you your first real opportunity? That first job, that first mentor, that first glimpse into the world of work? That “head start” shaped the path you’re on today. Now, it’s your turn to offer that same opportunity to the next generation.
With the Geelong region changing and growing, important regional industries like manufacturing are changing and innovating to meet demand, providing those ‘first’ opportunities that also help to build a strong locally grown workforce.
The Department of Education’s Head Start program is an important link for industry to this future workforce. Head Start works with schools and businesses – connecting motivated, work-ready students to employers via a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SBAT).
Building the Workforce of Tomorrow – Today
If we want students to consider careers in manufacturing, we need to show them what’s possible. That means:
- Creating clear pathways from school into the industry
- Offering real-world experiences like work placements, school-based apprenticeships, and traineeships
- Demystifying the industry—showing that it’s not just factory floors, but high-tech, creative, and future-focused work
By opening doors to high school students, you’re not just helping them— you’re helping your business. A skilled, passionate, and locally grown workforce is one of the most valuable assets any business can have.
How Can You Get Involved?
Let’s work together to make manufacturing visible, accessible, and exciting for young people in our region.
