GMC Champions Student Pathways into Manufacturing Careers

August 6, 2025

A strong, skilled workforce is the backbone of a thriving manufacturing sector. Our recent submission to the Victorian Government’s Inquiry into Student Pathways to In-Demand Industries reinforces our commitment to building that workforce – starting with students.

Proven Programs, Real Impact

GMC has led the way in delivering immersive, hands-on programs that connect students with real-world opportunities in advanced manufacturing, defence, clean economy, and agribusiness. Since 2018, over 400 Year 9 and 10 students have participated in our flagship initiatives:

  • Girls Leading Advanced Manufacturing (GLAM)
  • Geelong Future Leaders of Industry (GFLOI)
  • Clean Economy World of Work

These programs run across Geelong, Colac, Ballarat, Bendigo, and Wyndham, offering students monthly industry visits, hands-on workshops, and mentoring from professionals. The results speak for themselves: over 80% of participants report a strong intention to pursue careers in these sectors.

Breaking Down Barriers

Our submission identifies key barriers that limit student access to in-demand industries and offers practical, actionable recommendations:

  • Develop a cross-departmental risk framework to enable safe, supervised industry visits.
  • Fund professional development days and recognise industry engagement as valid PD for teachers.
  • Provide targeted training and include manufacturing career content in education frameworks.
  • Expand outreach programs like GLAM and GFLOI to more regions and underrepresented groups.
  • Fund structured, supported work-integrated learning (WIL) programs.
  • Support collaborative WIL programs that bridge education and employment.
  • Establish cross-departmental funding models that are practical for delivery partners.

Leading the Way Forward

GMC’s submission is a call to action. We’re proud to lead initiatives that not only inspire the next generation but also strengthen Victoria’s manufacturing future. By working collaboratively with schools, government, and industry, we’re building a pipeline of talent ready to power innovation and growth.
