A remarkable collaboration between GMC members LoomTex and Deakin University, alongside Full Circle Fibres and Country Road, is paving the way for more sustainable fashion – all proudly made in Australia. Funded by the Country Road Climate Fund, the Mud to Marle project transforms low-value Australian wool into premium yarn and fabric using low-impact, circular production methods.
From fibre to finished fabric, every stage of the process takes place in Australia – the wool is dyed at LoomTex in Geelong, blended with undyed Australian cotton, and spun into yarn at Deakin University’s Institute for Frontier Materials. The resulting yarn is then woven or knitted into fabric and crafted into sample garments.
This groundbreaking initiative showcases how ethical, low-waste, and fully domestic textile manufacturing is possible. By working collaboratively across the supply chain, Mud to Marle highlights the future of Australian fashion — sustainable and made in Australia. Watch this short video highlighting the process.
