GMC was pleased to support the establishment of a new pilot program developed by RMIT University aimed at tackling a key challenge facing Australia’s manufacturing and engineering sectors: finding skilled, job-ready graduates.
The innovative Degree Apprenticeship Program in Mechanical Engineering offers a unique solution by blending academic learning with real industry experience.
Designed over the past three years in collaboration with industry leaders – including representatives of GMC and member companies – the five-year degree apprenticeship program allows employers to recruit full-time apprentices who will study part-time toward an engineering degree. In the first two years, apprentices complete an Advanced Diploma of Engineering (Mechanical), progressing into a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mechanical Engineering) in the final three years. Throughout, apprentices spend an average of 3.6 days a week on the job and 1.4 days in class.
This hands-on approach means apprentices graduate as qualified engineers with five years of workplace experience and a deep understanding of their employer’s systems and processes. The program also includes the equivalent of a minor in systems engineering based on the INCOSE framework.
Employers benefit by shaping future engineers from day one, while also receiving support from RMIT and access to financial incentives under the Australian Apprenticeships scheme for the first two years.
The program is open to school leavers, current employees, tradespeople, and career changers—helping attract a more diverse range of talent to the profession.
Employers have until September 2025 to commit to the program, with apprentices starting in January 2026 and classes beginning in March. For businesses seeking skilled engineers with practical experience, this program offers a powerful pipeline for future talent.
