The West Midlands region of the UK shares a number of similarities with Geelong – a strong automotive supply chain transitioning to new opportunities in the low carbon economy and aerospace, substantial R&D capabilities via resident universities, and the area was host to the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. GMC recently hosted a West Midlands delegation to explore future business opportunities.
However, with a much larger population and emergent EV industry there are many opportunities to learn from the West Midlands experience.
WMGC’s Head of Inward Investment, Jon Baty, briefed representatives from GMC, local manufacturers, Deakin University, Manufutures, the Victorian Government and City of Greater Geelong on the region’s work across the low carbon sector including future mobility, future energy, sustainable built environment and the circular economy.
