Focus on transport industry R&D to grow manufacturing capabilities

January 18, 2023

On Monday 24 October 2022, the Minister for Public Transport, The Hon Ben Carroll MP, announced an exciting new joint initiative between the Department of Transport and rolling stock manufacturer Alstom: the Victorian Mobility Supply Chain Centre of Excellence (MSCCE).

This initiative will support local transport industry related research and development, workforce development training and education, and support Victorian supply chain development and industry engagement activities.

Complementing the Next Generation Trams project, Alstom have committed to supporting local research and development over a ten-year period.

With an initial focus on growing Victoria’s light rail manufacturing capabilities, the MSCCE is expected to expand to include other transport and mobility industry functions, facilitating long term innovation and export opportunities through the development, funding, testing, and commercialisation of research and development projects.

The MSCCE is a key part of the Victorian Government’s plan to provide for the growing needs of the Australian rail and rolling stock industry, complementing the objectives of the recently released Victorian Rail Skills Strategy 2022-2026 and supporting the significant investment in Victorian transport infrastructure.

The Department of Transport will provide a briefing for members on the MSCCE at the members only GMC Connect on February 7.
